PHYSICS OF THE UPPER POLAR ATMOSPHERE (Second Edition) This is a completely updated revision of the book first published in 1997. It is the only extended textbook that covers in particular the physics of the upper polar atmosphere and the polar lights, the spectacular phenomenon that demonstrates the end product of a process that takes place at extremely high latitudes between the solar wind and the Earth's upper atmosphere. It tries to follow the chain of processes that occurs when the stream of particles (the solar wind) leaves the Sun, travels through interplanetary space and ends up as energetic particle beams producing spectacular auroral forms in the polar sky.
